Private Incidental Travel
The Murdoch University Travel insurance policy covers staff and students for private travel that is deemed incidental to any business travel undertaken. As a result of increasing costs for travel insurance and related fringe benefits tax requirements for personal travel, a review of the definition of incidental personal travel has recently been completed. The revised definition is as follows:
Incidental private travel is 2 days or 20% of the Business component of the trip, which ever is the greater.
The Business component includes but is not limited to-:
- Outside Studies Program
- Preparing papers
- Writing up research notes;
- Recovery travel time
- Weekends in between business duties
- Official duties
- Conference, research, consultancy, administrative & academic duties
- Interviewing of candidates and new appointments; and
- University Exchange (including exams)
By way of example, if the trip is from 1-10 days you will be covered for 2 days of incidental private travel.
If the trip is more than 10 days you will be covered up to 20% of the business component of the trip as incidental private travel (to the nearest day).
Where incidental private travel exceeds 2 days or 20% of the business component, the University’s travel policy will not apply and you will need to arrange separate travel insurance, at the staff or student’s own expense. To assist with this, the University is making available a link to our insurer AIG, where you will be able to purchase the additional insurance at a very competitive premium.
The link is available through the Insurance website Insurance/Insurance Policies and Procedures/Travel Insurance. https://aigtravel.com.au/murdochuniversity/default.aspx
Please note this arrangement is available for staff and students to use. There is no financial benefit to Murdoch University and no requirement to use this arrangement.
If you require private travel insurance, it is important to note that many policies provide cover when you leave and return to Australia as part of the cover. If you are commencing your private travel outside of Australia you will need to make sure the Insurer is aware of this.
*** Please note private incidental travel cover WILL NOT be provided under the Murdoch University travel policy if the DFAT warning for countries to be visited is either level 4 or 5. You will need to purchase your own insurance cover if you wish to travel to these areas for private travel. ***
